These lines of liquid metalhave been printed onto paperusing a customised desktopprinter. The team behind the technology say it may one daybe possible for people toprint their own electronicdevices at home.
Flexible electronics are gainingpopularity, and the idea of usingpaper that can easily be bent orfolded has been around for awhile.But the equipment andconditions needed to print liquidmetals onto paper rule out easy,large-scale production.
Now, a team led by Jing Liu of theChinese Academy of Scienceshas found a way to print flexiblecircuits at room temperature.They used commercially availablepaper and equipment, with a fewmodifications,such as adding abrush-like porous tip to thedispensing nozzle to prevent theink clogging. The ink itselfis a gallium-indium alloy, which stays liquid at room temperature,and is coatedwith silicone after printing. The resulting electronics work well and can be bent without breaking.
